A coating adds a protective layer over the factory paint, making the car easier to clean, reducing water spotting and light oxidation, and adding gloss.
The preparation matters more than the product: a full wash, iron fallout removal and machine polish to correct fine swirls has to come first. If the goal is protection against stone chips rather than easier cleaning, paint protection film offers far more physical resistance at a higher cost.
One to three years depending on the grade, the quality of the application and where the car is parked. Long periods outdoors and strong alkaline shampoos shorten it noticeably.
It reduces the fine swirl marks from washing, but offers nothing against stone chips or impacts. For that, paint protection film is the answer.
