    About vehicle inspection

Private cars in Hong Kong must pass an examination before each licence renewal once they are six years old. Commercial vehicles, taxis and light buses are examined more frequently.

The examination covers braking performance, emissions, lighting, steering and suspension, tyres, body structure and underbody. The usual reasons for failure are uneven braking force, emissions above limits, misaligned lights and insufficient tyre tread.

    Vehicle inspection: common questions

When does a private car need its first inspection?

From six years after first registration, before every licence renewal. Cars under six years old generally renew without an examination.

What happens if a vehicle fails?

You receive a notice listing the defects. Once repaired, the vehicle must be re-examined within the stated period, and the licence can be renewed after it passes.
