Hong Kong summers mean the air-conditioning runs almost year-round. Weak cooling usually comes down to a refrigerant leak, a blocked cabin filter, or a condenser packed with dust.
Simply topping up refrigerant treats the symptom. If it runs low again within a few months there is a leak, and the workshop should trace it with a detector or dye before recharging. Cabin filters are worth replacing yearly or every 15,000 km — a blocked one is the usual source of stale smells.
Common causes are low or leaking refrigerant, a condenser blocked with dust or leaves, a clogged cabin filter, a failing compressor or clutch, or a dead cooling fan. A workshop should read the high and low side pressures to identify which.
No. A sealed system should not consume refrigerant. If it needs regular topping up there is a leak, and the new gas will escape the same way.
