Private cars are the vehicle type served by the largest number of registered workshops, and nearly all of them will take one. What differs is which marques they know, whether they have the right diagnostic equipment, and how heavy a job they can take on.
Routine work — oil, filters, tyres, brake pads — can go to any registered workshop, so pick a convenient one. Engine or gearbox strip-downs and awkward electronic faults are worth taking to a Class 2 or above with more bays and manufacturer-level diagnostics.
While the car is under a manufacturer warranty, follow the specified servicing to avoid affecting a claim. After that, registered workshops can handle almost all work, usually for less; weigh up the workshop's class, equipment and familiarity with your model.
Give the make, model and year on the phone and ask whether they have the right diagnostic tools, whether common parts are stocked or need ordering, and whether they have worked on the model before. Specific answers usually mean genuine experience.
