    Servicing heavy goods vehicles in Hong Kong

    Heavy goods vehicles exceed 24 tonnes permitted gross weight. Very few workshops can take them, and almost all are on open sites or large industrial plots in the New Territories where there is room to manoeuvre and heavy lifting gear.

    The work is mainly air systems, axles, suspension, hydraulics and bodywork. Some workshops also build bodies and can handle tipper modifications and reinforcement.

    Where is heavy vehicle repair concentrated?

    Mainly the New Territories — Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, North District and Kwai Tsing — where sites are large enough and close to the container terminals and boundary crossings.

    Is preventive maintenance worth it on heavy vehicles?

    Very much so. A roadside failure costs the repair plus lost running time, recovery, and possible traffic disruption. Scheduled checks of air systems, axles, suspension and tyres cost far less.
